A real place. An optical illusion.
The underwater waterfall is a pattern in the sea off the south-west coast of Mauritius. Pale sand and sediment contrast with darker water, creating a waterfall-like shape when seen from above. There is no waterfall pouring through the surface.
Why perspective matters
Aerial photographs reveal the shape of the sand patterns and reef together. From a beach or boat, the angle is different. A visit to the Le Morne area and a flight over the illusion offer very different experiences.
The view is shaped by conditions
The appearance varies with light, water and weather conditions. A published flight route can include the area without guaranteeing that the illusion will look exactly like a photograph on the day.
